Introduction

Welcome to the e-learning course for PROMPPT. We hope you enjoy the course. Here is a short guide on how to navigate around the course and what information you will need to get the most out of the training.

Welcome to the PROMPPT training

PROMPPT Training

The PROMPPT training involves 3 main components:

  1. E-learning course and training manual
  2. In-practice assignments
  3. Group learning sessions

1. E-learning course and training manual

Aim: The e-learning and training manual aim to support clinical pharmacists in general practice to deliver pain management reviews to patients prescribed long-term opioids for persistent pain as part of the PROMPPT research programme.

When: You can complete the e-learning course at a time most convenient to you. We anticipate the e-learning to take approximately two half days to complete, although we appreciate everyone will work at their own pace.

What: The e-learning course is formed of 3 modules:

Course navigation

All e-learning components can be accessed via the e-learning homepage or via the e-learning course navigation menu found on the top menu.

When working through one of the three modules, you can navigate within the module using the course progress menu on the right.

The e-learning is supported by a comprehensive PROMPPT pain management review training manual.

2. In-practice assignments

You will be asked to practice skills covered in the e-learning course in your general practice setting.

Assignment 1

Aim: To practice skills learnt from PROMPPT Consultation Skills lessons:

  • Communication skills
  • Exploring pain more widely using the Pain Concerns Form

When: After completion of PROMPPT Foundation and Consultation Skills modules and before Group Session 1.

What: To complete the homework assignment, you will need to:

Identify one or more patient(s) with persistent pain – who are prescribed opioids for persistent pain but are not eligible for the study as opioids have been prescribed for less than 6 months.

Arrange a time to consult the patient the appointment needs to be scheduled before Group Session 1. It is important that you give the patient(s) some context for these consultations and you may wish to say something along the lines of: “We are trying to improve how we support patients with long-term pain at the practice and I would like to talk to you about this” or “ I wonder if we could meet again to discuss this”

Why: Use the consultation as an opportunity to:

  • practice actively listening to patients with persistent pain talk about their pain
  • practice using the Pain Concerns Form
  • reflect on your experiences of doing this

Aim to bring at least one case to Group Session 1 and be prepared to share your experience / reflections with the group. Your case will also form the basis for subsequent role play in the learning session.

Although it may be tempting to try to incorporate other new skills from the e-learning, please focus only on active listening and using the Pain Concern Form. Other skills will be practiced in future homework assignments.

Assignment 2

Aim: To practice skills learnt in PROMPPT Consultation Skills lessons:

  • Fostering behaviour change
  • Shifting the conversation to self-care

And skills learnt in the Pain Management Skills lesson:

  • Supporting self-care strategies

When: After completion of PROMPPT Consultation Skills and Pain Management Skills modules and before Group Session 2.

What: To complete the homework assignment, you will need to:

Identify one or more patient(s) with persistent pain – similar to the first assignment, the patient should be someone who would be otherwise excluded from the study. This can be the same patient consulted with for assignment 1, perhaps as a follow-up appointment.

Arrange a time to consult the patient the appointment needs to be scheduled before Group Session 2. You may wish to practice this at a follow-up consultation with your patient from assignment 1. If so, try to also practice doing this in conjunction with active listening and the Pain Concern Form with a new patient. Reflect on your experience of putting it all together and how this practicing these skills separately.

Why: Use the consultation as an opportunity to:

  • practice using motivational interviewing techniques
  • practice discussing self-care
  • reflect on your experiences of doing this

Aim to bring at least one case to Group Session 2 and be prepared to share your experience / reflections with the group. Your case will also form the basis for subsequent role play in the learning session.

3. Group learning sessions

The e-learning course and in-practice assignments are supported by two remote group learning sessions to be hosted on MS Teams. For more information about these sessions please visit our group learning sessions page containing links to join.
